To become a certified nurse aide (CNA) in the state of Texas, you must first take a state-approved training program and pass the competency examination. According to the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS), you may skip the training program if you previously took the course in another state, took a course for a registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical nurse (LPN) license or are currently enrolled in a state-accredited nursing program. But everyone, regardless of their previous experience, needs to register for and pass the CNA exam to gain certification in Texas.

Register for and successfully complete one of the DADS-approved training programs, if required. A link to all the approved programs in the state of Texas is available online. Each program requires a minimum 75 hours of training, split between clinical work and classroom education.

Contact your program coordinator to help you schedule a date for the exam. Most programs will contact the Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation Services (NACES) on your behalf.

Contact NACES on your own if your program did not schedule an exam date for you or if you are qualified to take the exam only. NACES can be reached at 800-444-5178.

Register with NACES. The registration process includes paying an $83 examination fee , as of 2010; filling out the application form; and supplying proof that you've completed an examination course or proof that you are exempt from taking that training program. Upon completion of the registration process, you will be able to schedule a test date and location.

Tip

According to the Texas Nursing Schools website, you must take your CNA exam within 24 months of completing a DADS-approved training program.

Most DADS-approved training programs include the cost of the state exam in your course fees.

Warning

Do not try to lie, forge or cheat at any point during the training or examination process. Revocation of your CNA certification is permanent.
